Textile Portraiture

People are my favorite subjects. Rather than paint them, I worked with layers of fabric that have been cut and reassembled to create their likeness. The contours of each face have been simplified to their greatest degree while still retaining the resemblance of the person. Assembled incorrectly or overly simplified, one cannot recognize the sitter.

I chose only to use photos people have taken of themselves to immortalize the fleeting moment of the “selfie.” Quilts having that historical or heirloom quality emphasize the contrast of the two notions.
