Doodle Quilt
For baby number three, I decided to go ahead and throw my own baby shower. They say that you really only have a shower for the first kiddo, but what the heck. This being my first boy I went with a Little Prince theme and part of that was in my take on a guest book for the party. Instead of a name or a message I was going to use guest doodles to commemorate the party. This was very much inspired by the chapter in The Little Prince where the prince asks the visitor to draw a picture of a sheep.
Sharing the Instructions
Letting the guests know my vision proved to be the most challenging aspects. Partly because most people don’t feel like they are “creative” and also because they haven’t ever done it before. These were the steps that I shared and luckily most people understood even if they didn’t really want to participate.
The results were really fantastic. People came up with some awesome drawings and while not everyone followed the instructions (many just creating drawings from scratch) I ended up with about ten works of art.
Printing the fabric
For transferring the images to fabric I purchased a printable fabric that can be used with a basic ink jet printer. These can be kind of expensive for a project I wasn’t even sure would work, so I printed about for drawings to a page leaving me with images that were 4” x 5” or so.
Then I went through my bin of scraps and picked out all the blue anythings. My inspiration came from a simple google search for “scrap quilt” and found this great website.
In the end mine was of course no where near as polished having only made one successful quilt before, but having the inspiration really made a difference.
With fabric and images selected, it was then time to create my blocks.
Assembly
Once I know how the quilt was going to be arranged it was just a matter of creating my 6” x 6” blocks, arranging those into strips and adding the backing. Due to terrible math and the dullest scissors on planet earth, I have ended up with a some what square 24” x 24” wall hanging that I am pretty proud of.
