10 Stories from Mom

  • Stacie was full of independence and mischief from the beginning. One of Grammys favorite stories is about Stacie when she was 20 months old. We had just brought Beau home from the hospital and everyone and everything was a bit chaotic. Stacie had her bath and her PJs on but couldn't get anyones attention to put her to bed. So she waddled down the hall pushing her baby dolls little pink, plastic stroller while she had her bottle in her mouth, a baby girl on a mission. Grammy saw her and followed her and saw her go to her bed (a waterbed in fact) and climbed on her stroller to her bed, stuck her bottle in her mouth, kicked the wall which would rock her and sweet Stacie fell promptly to sleep. This started her characteristic of being independent and taking care of things herself.

  • When she was two she had her birthday party at Gramps and Grammys house with us all. We have a video of her at the end of the long day (why we have a video when this sweet baby was obviously struggling and we could have helped her but instead just filmed her I just don't know....). She had new pajamas for her birthday and spent the longest time trying to put the top and then bottom on. You could tell she knew where they went but to figurer out the how was the challenge. She worked and worked patiently and came so close some times but finally took everything off and threw it in the floor. She knew when to move on when something just wasn't working.

  • When she was two and a half the same little pink plastic doll stroller comes to mind. One day I found her in the den, sitting in that stroller, her legs crossed at the ankle (such a lady) with some stacked Pringles by her side. The TV was on and she was watching Wheel of Fortune and she would take a little bite of the Pringles and then when someone got the letter correct and the audience clapped she would put those little hands together and clap right along with them. She would repeat this fthough it was only for this day. I think she learned her alphabet that day and took after Gramps with her love of letters which make words, sentences and stories.

  • When she turned 3 she got a little dress with a kitty cat on the front, purple and white stripes and purple sleeves. It was her favorite and she would wear it every day if she could. She also got a Webigale stuffed animal from Duck Tales. She carried "Webby" with her EVERYWHERE. We finally had to take Webby to the cleaners figuring they would know the best way to learn this in good shape, they looked at us like we were crazy. They obviously didn't understand how much this meant. Her loyalty has been evident from he beginning.

  • When Stacie was in High School we discovered "Coach" with Craig T Nelson and Jerry Van Dyke. Why we bonded over a sports show is a mystery but we watched it every day together......at 6 in the morning. We would laugh and talk and found a very special time together over that silly show, it was great....

  • Stacie has moved a lot in her life and for many of those moves it was just her and me. I must say that we got to be a pretty good team at it. We got to where we worked as such a team we could put together an Ikea bed lickeety spit without saying a word. She always made it fun too, One time we had the little Ranger truck filled to the brim coming back from Boston where she went to school and this huge storm showed up. We parked at a gas station under a cover and went inside and ate snacks and did scratch offs and laughed so hard at our predicament I don't think anyone else would have made it so fun,

  • When Stacie was about seven Steve had to get the kids ready for church and the style was to have the curly bangs. He got the curling iron and wrapped the hair around it and rested it til the curl took, he rested it on her little forehead, that is until he could smell it. OUCH. Stacie didn't say a word, she is a trooper

  • One day she told me someone (I think it was Stef but not totally sure) said a very bad word, she whispered that it was the “s” word….it was “stupid”. She was clearly shocked and had to let me know so I could snip it in the bud I do believe.

  • I llove hearing her tell Stories about her adventures. I know of no one else who has spent spring break in Iraq (especially by choice). Christmas in a cave in Turkey, Hot Air Balloon rides, Sky Diving. Where she has lived and traveled just absolutely amazes me. The class that she does things that would intimidate and overwhelm most is done by her with such grace.

  • I always loved going to see her whether it was in Boston, NYC or DC. She always has made me feel so welcomed and I knew we were always going to have fun together. Even if there was something difficult going on we would cry together, talk and then find somewhere in there to laugh together. She is good at keeping me from running into someone or something when we are taking an epic stroll. (do those words go together? they do for us). She did her best anyway and if she couldn't she would help me keep my dignity (ish). When she lived in Graz Austria Steve and I took our one and only trip to Europe to see her. We had a fine time but once we made it to Graz with Stacie it was all better. The classic story of how she was there for me is when we boarded a bus and she helped Steve find his seat but before she got me firmly sat (come to think of it we were a bit of extra work for her but she never let on, I am just figuring this out as I am writing this) the bus took off and I lost my footing and fell.....directly onto a mans crotch....directly and firmly......She grabbed my arm and didn't let me laugh until we got off the bus. This helped us keep our dignity (his and ours). Thank you Stacie.

Stef’s Stories

Trying to come up with specific memories of my sister is hard to do. I'm sure if you asked her to come up with detailed memories of our childhood, like what she wore the first day of school in third grade, she would be able to tell you :) That's one of the things I love most about Stac. She is a human crystal ball that can recall so many memories of our childhood, most that make me laugh and smile and sometimes cry. Im lucky to have her.

The very first memory that I have of my sister is the day that they brought home Beau from the hospital. I remember her short hairstyle with the signature bangs. I believe she had on a white tank top with flowers on it that showed her cute little rolls on her arms when she reached for Beau. She was so excited and then the second she held him her face changed. She was ready to hand him back ha

My childhood memories of Stac often go back to all the trips and time we spent in Roswell with the family, which are my best memories spending so much time with Gramps and Grammy and our cousins. I remember how much Stac loved the color green because it was Grammy's favorite color (whom she adored) and how most of the time Stac spent in Roswell was with Erica. They were always together and were always funny together making cakes that tasted like acid or banging their heads against a wall singing cooka Rocha. I remember a night we stayed at Aunt Beckys house and it was storming the night we slept over. Stac and I were always scaredy cats while Meredith and Erica were not. There was a picture of Cramer in their living room that spooked Stac and I that night. I think that might of been one of first ever all nighters ha....we didn't sleep much.

For some reason first grade for Stacie really stand out in my mind. I know that was one of her favorite years and she absolutely loved Ms. Rodriguez. I remember being so jealous when she came home and told me she had a reading loft in her room. I might be making this part up, but I also remember that was the year Stacie got to go see Home Alone for her class field trip and I went to see Aladdin and I was jealous of her once again ha. And you can't forget her favorite Dalmation shirt she wore

When I think of summers in our childhood I remember Stac always had the best tan. I don't know why that sticks out in my mind, but it does. She loved the pool, so that could have something to do with the amazing tan. I remember her in the pool and she would play pool games with everyone, but she was totally content doing flips underwater by herself and keeping herself entertained. Now having my own kids, she remind me a lot of my Ben. The middle child who is easy going and able to go with the flow. I love that about Ben and Im sure my parents loved that about Stac.

As we got older and we moved to the east coast, we spent less summers in New Mexico and more in Maryland. The transition summer between Louisiana and Maryland was a summer that really sticks out in my mind.  Of course it was hard because not only were we in the hardest and most awkward years, but we were trying to find a place to live. Looking back I would say that Stac and I share a special bond that many other siblings don't. That summer was the summer of us, just hanging out. Spending many hours at Aunt Nancy's house watching Forrest Gump and Wallflowers and Hanson music videos on repeat :) it was a summer of lots of unknowns, but I really don't remember any fighting amongst Stac and I. We made the most of that summer and in a way I am glad we had that time.

Now Stacie's post college years get a little fuzzy, but what I do remember about this time is how Stacie really came into her own and had so many experiences. One of many things I admire about my sister, is that she took chances during this pivotal time in life. She traveled for the first time a broad and saw so many things that opened her eyes to the world and how she wanted to live her life. I wish I would have taken that chance and was brave like she was. When she came back from Australia with her cute bob haircut I was beyond envious. I always wanted to cut my hair short and she did it. I have a vivid memory of her holding a koala or some sort of animal like that with her short bob and it was pure joy on her face. I remember being so happy for her, that she had that experience and that time to really figure out what she wanted out of life.

She has always been there for me from helping me make baby books, to putting flyer together for the kids school programs, to pretty much writing my thesis for my Masters..I can always count on her to help me with the things I know Im not good at but she is.

Everybody remembers their wedding day. Might not remember every detail and what was said, but you do remember how you felt. I couldn't tell you every word from Stacie's speech, but I remember it being heartfelt, very funny, and spot on (and there was a Chuck Norris reference). She has always had a way with words and putting them on paper, but I remember that I felt special and she was able to capture Ryan and I's relationship so perfectly.

Now many years later a lot has happened. For me, our newest memories are made with not only Stac and I but with our husbands and my kids. They love their aunt and uncle and look forward to every year when we get to do grab bag and just hang with you guys for a few days. My kids are getting older and we are excited to start traveling with them soon and our first stop abroad will be to visit Stac and Kyle and create even more core memories not only for us but for my kids to have some wonderful childhood memories with the best sister and aunt. Love you Stac
