The First Four Challenge: A Pinterest Purge
I have been a fan of Pinterest for ages, well over a decade at least of finding my latest inspiration while scrolling through an unending universe of ideas. I have many many many boards dedicated to this and that and it is always a blast to sit down in the evening and scroll. But will all these great concepts collected in one place I realized that I had not spent a whole lot of time actually doing any of these things. Thus was born the idea of the first four purge. I decided to pick one of these boards and actually do the first four pins I had there.
Board Selection
The board selection had to be practical because things like wardrobe or room make overs would get a little costly. I went with my craft board that I call “Make it” and discovered the following beauties.
Macrame Banana Holder
Simple Supplies:
Hemp or twine
scissors
wooden beads
I had a bit of a background in tying these sorts of knots but used a refresh with this YouTube video
It turned out pretty cute, but banana are surprisingly heavy and I had to put a really hook into my kitchen shelf in order to support a full cluster of bananas. I still recommend it however as it keeps your bananas from getting bruised in a fruit bowl.
Wine Cork Garden Tags
Supplies:
Corks
sharpie
Metal not wood skewer
This one while super simple was not super practical and these cute little labels were gone within a few weeks. I used wooden skewers (mistake number one) and the corks couldn’t really stand up to the elements.
Wine cork window hanger
Supplies:
Old necklace pieces
corks
found wood
pliers
screw eyes
chain
I will say this was my most successful piece. Found the wood (about 6” long) on a walk, and linked broken necklaces, old earrings and the corks using the mini screw eyes. Lastly just some old chain to hang by and it really turned out nicely.
IN BETWEEN THESE TWO PROJECTS I ATTEMPTED ONE ABSOLUTE FAILURE. THE IDEA WAS TO CREATE MOSS GRAFFITI USING MOSS, YOGURT, BEER AND A BLENDER. IT WAS A MESS FROM START TO FINISH. IF THIS IS ONE OF YOUR FIRST FOUR PINS- GOOD LUCK BECAUSE ALL I ENDED UP WITH WAS A MESS.
Pompom tree branch
Supplies:
Tree Branch
Pompoms
Hot Glue
This one was mildly successful. I think that it is key to choose a branch with some symmetry. Once I began to attach the pompoms I found that the branches were all on one side. However, my kiddos loved them and promptly tore them to shreds after it was decided they were fairy wands.
In the end it felt really good to have finally turned these aspirations into reality whether or not they turned out and now I can move on to the first four in my “Hairstyles” board. Wish me luck!
